Go G-Men!

Students from James A. Garfield Middle School had the unique opportunity to attend the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Glass Bridge at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park—making them some of the first students in Ohio to cross the spectacular structure.

The field trip was a special extension of two 4th quarter G-Men Time activities: Sneakers and Sunshine led by Mrs. Morgan and the GMS Plant Club led by Mrs. Law. Students participated in a day full of exploration, education, and celebration, all while enjoying one of Ohio’s most scenic natural landmarks.

The 137-foot-long glass walkway—stretching across a gorge and offering a clear view nearly 50 feet down—showcases the dramatic rock formations and geological history of the park, which date back over 300 million years. The bridge culminates in a breathtaking overlook of Minnehaha Falls, providing an unforgettable view and a rare chance to stand suspended above a natural chasm.

During the ceremony, students listened to speakers from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, who shared insights into the engineering behind the bridge, the importance of conservation, and the geological significance of the site. Students then hiked to the bridge, took part in the ribbon-cutting, and were among the first to step onto the glass panels spanning the gorge.

The experience wasn’t just memorable—it was educational. The field trip directly connected with the 8th grade science curriculum, including Ohio Learning Standards related to Earth’s history, geological processes, and erosion. Seeing the rock formations and sediment layers in person helped reinforce classroom concepts and brought textbook learning to life.

After exploring the bridge and surrounding trails, students capped off the day with a picnic lunch and celebratory ice cream in the park.

A special thank you goes out to John Trevelline, Park and Watercraft Manager, for the generous invitation to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime event. It was a day our students—and staff—will never forget!

It's a great time to be a G-Man!
