Go G-Men!

At James A. Garfield Middle School, creativity is taking center stage as three 8th grade students prepare to showcase their artwork in one of the most prestigious student art events in Ohio.

Sabrina, Peyton, and Jedi have each submitted original pieces to the 2026 Ohio Juried Exhibition of Student Art, a unique statewide opportunity that occurs only once every four years—much like the Olympic Games.

Go G-Men!

This highly anticipated exhibition, presented by the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, invites students from across Ohio to demonstrate excellence in visual arts while connecting their work to the theme of the violin—its music, performance, and artistic expression.

What makes this moment especially meaningful is that 2025–2026 marks the inaugural year for Ohio students to participate in this program, expanding an already prestigious national initiative into the state.

Fractured Violin -- Sabrina

While many students create artwork during the school day, Sabrina, Peyton, and Jedi took their commitment to the next level. Each student dedicated additional time outside of class to develop, revise, and refine their submissions.

From early sketches to final compositions, their work reflects not only artistic talent but also perseverance, attention to detail, and a willingness to push beyond expectations. Their efforts embody the spirit of Garfield’s commitment to excellence—showing what can be achieved when passion meets hard work.

Vines & Veracity -- Jedi

Supporting these students throughout the process is Garfield Middle School art teacher Mrs. Gilmer. Through her guidance, feedback, and encouragement, she has helped these young artists grow their skills and prepare their work for a competitive regional stage.

Mrs. Gilmer’s dedication ensures that students are not only meeting high artistic standards but also gaining confidence in sharing their work beyond the classroom.

The Ohio Juried Exhibition of Student Art is designed to celebrate and elevate student artists across the state. Participants are judged at the regional level, with selected works advancing toward statewide recognition and the opportunity to be displayed during the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in fall 2026.

In total, more than $18,000 in awards will be distributed, including recognition for students, teachers, and schools, further highlighting the importance of arts education and student achievement.
